Rec Diaries You Appreciate

MyDD continues to have a rec list easily dominated by those opposed to the Democratic Party's nominee for the office of president.

This does not accurately reflect the entire population of this site, it does not reflect the population of the Democratic Party, and it does not reflect the issues being addressed and considered by Progressives.

This is easy to fix.

We are Americans. We are people who believe in progressive and democratic ideals. The core of these ideals is that the exercised power of the population to speak with their votes provides the best means for making decisions. Decisions such as what commentary reflects the views of the people reading and writing on this forum.

There is a handful of folks who jump to rec every diary that in any way questions the Democratic Party's nominee for the office of President. Many of these people are not regular commentors or diarists on this site and every indication is that they are called in to subvert the purpose of MyDD's rec list.

How many people have the power to put a diary on the rec list, you ask?

Eight.

Eight is a common number of recommenders for diaries which make the rec list, sometimes even less. It is a simple experiment in the power of exercised democracy for you to make your views known, and to see the results of your choices reflected in the commentary that your fellow MyDDers and visitors to this site see most clearly.

So, if you value diversity of discourse and the pursuit of Progressive conversations and goals on this site, I ask that you take the time to click the recommend button when you see a diary you like. When enough people do this for their own reasons - whatever those reasons may be - the rec list will cease to be simply a handle that a minority of willing folks can pull and will instead return to its purpose of reflecting the best commentary on MyDD.

It's sliding off of the top page and barely anybody has read it. I'm trying to discuss winning strategy so we can further progressive policy goals.

Anybody care to read it? If you rec it, we can really dig into this one. I'm not attacking a soul in this. This is the sort of thing I thought MyDD was all about!

I rec'd your's and this one. I also rec'd a couple of others after reading the gist of this diary in a comment on another diary. I posted my first diary last night and it got 3 rec's. I was hoping for a couple of more, but once it dropped off the 10 most recent list there were no more comments. Oh well, it was my first diary.

I recced yours. I thought it was a good comment on McCain - not just a scud-missile cause he's a Republican, but because he has slipped from his positive image.

I agree with your commentary. At first I thought he'd be OK, but the more I look at him the more he makes more more than nervous. Don't want to simply tar him with a GOP brush, but he either doesn't have what it takes, used to and lost it, or is entirely too easily directed by the GOP powers.

People, especially people who are not rabid supporters of a candidate, don't like to be referred to as "Obama(fillintheblank)" or "Clinton(fillintheblank)", etc..

it doesn't. Because it is the people you are trying to bring on board that may not like it. They may want to support Obama or simply vote for him, but they may not want to be labeled with an Obama(anything) label.

I am an Obama supporter, other than that, I am not and don't want to be referred to as anything else. I am not an Obamaniac, Obamabot, OBama(fillintheblank).

I also did not like to be referred to as a Clintonista, etc.

I hope you can understand this.

You are trying to win these people over to at least vote for Obama, why take the chance to piss them off?

That is a good point. We all tend to use short forms because, well, they're short. But it may well be easier to get a Republican to vote for Obama if they do not see themselves as adopting an Obamacan label.

Many will vote for Obama but if you try and make them into one of the "movement" people, they will balk!

One of the Obamanauts is a Republican. We're proud of her and happy for her company.

I have been chanting for a long time that this is about more than winning the GE, we need to win the country. Bringing in Republicans (Obamacans) requires more of a stretch of the mind than bringing back those who supported Clinton or Edwards, but if we cannot we win the GE and lose the war. The Obamacan diary and the Generational Analysis diary (in which Boomers are argued to be extremely divisively partisan) speak well to this topic.

You hit on a key aspect of both Obama's appeal and his promise.

During the primary he was variously mocked or disregarded because of his appeal to moderate Republicans . . . as if he were actually saying that we can all hold hands and sing songs.

But he's not and never has been saying that he's going to convince ALL Repubs to jump on board, or even half or even a very large minority.

But adding to the Dem lead in both houses, massaging the few moderate Repubs in both houses, and convincing a noticeable percentage of Repubs to vote for him is going to give Obama not only the appearance of a mandate, but an actual mandate from 'the people' with which he can work.

The point isn't to throw all our ideals out the window to get some Repubs on board, it's to explain our ideals in a way that shows quite a few Repubs that our ideals are also often theirs.

I think some of these people are just plain bitter about the campaign. Their candidate lost, so the other candidate that won must be a very bad man. Thus they leap on anything they can use to criticize him and thus use to make the rest of us see the error of our ways in rejecting their superior candidate.

Their goal is to see the rest of us thump our head and go, "Oh, why do I only see now, when it's too late, that Obama is a bad, bad person!"

Except for their having that perverse need, they are probably true progressives.

And I read few of your diaries. I'm making a more generalized observation, though, in an attempt to make sense of the Obama-bashing, Obama-supporter-bashing, and concern-troll type diaries we keep getting.

I'm only pointing out that some of the worst bashing is coming from bitter progressive trolls, not McCain trolls.

I actually agree with some of the diaries critical of Obama. It's just that in the context of those criticisms (some valid) coming from die-hard ex-Hillary supporters with an axe to grind, it's hard to hold a grown-up conversation.

the idea that a progressive blog would have a diary not just criticizing Keith Olbermann but turning his name into a derogatory slur, that would most surely have provoked a response to the author like "You guys are messed up."

I have to ascribe it to bitterness over the campaign. Keith's biggest sin was that he called out Hillary Clinton for her white-voters comment. You may think it's unfair, but that doesn't make him an object of contempt for the progressive blogosphere, as you would have it. Most notably because we have so FEW progressive voices in the media. The need to "choose your battles wisely" would in itself dictate that Keith Olbermann is not a good place to start dismantling the media.

That is, not unless your beef is really over Hillary's loss rather than the media itself. In which case, you really are just a troll wasting our time.

In the past week or so there have been a slew of diaries about the horribly sexist world we live in, with lots of specific or tangential digs at anyone who did not support the recently departed female candidate. In itself this is more than a valid discussion, but the rec list has often disolved into a single-issue menu. Too often for a progressive blog imho, the only other primary item on the menu is how terrible the Democratic nominee is...

My point in this diary is not so much as to say there should be a pro-nominee love-fest, rather that the MyDD community should express its choice of diaries more often. With such a small number of people bothering to rec anything, it could just as easily be a dozen pro-watercooler recommenders dominating the rec list with diaries advocating more (or less, or bluer) watercoolers. Inasmuch as the folks who come here bother reccing whatever it is that strikes their sensibilities as being worthwhile, the rec list will reflect whatever that aggregate view is.

There is certinaly more to talk about than any one issue, mine or anyone else's.

The last diary you and I shared comments on (I just replied to your last to me) is titled "I still don't buy into the Obama Hype"... It was on the rec list with eight recommenders, and the reason I wrote this diary, and your comment to me was in response to the comment that started this very diary.

I am calling you for either outright insincerity or a logic I do not understand if you actually believe that was just a simple argumentative diary. The title says otherwise - just imagine if I had written the same diary four months ago on this same site with the name of a different candidate in it. I would have been flamed to the core by the FleaFlicker crowd who ruled the roost at the time.

the diary in question, as well as the one i wrote had valid criticisms in it. as i told you before, in which several people have called you and your bud above who had the audacity to call me a GOP'er (even ardent BO supporters in the primary)- this is not an echo chamber. if you want one, i hear kos is pretty good.

Cronies? I recognize folks in this thread from here, but there isn't anyone I know outside MyDD. Wonder all you choose, but I have been here long enough to have proven I am who I am, and there are only three or four others on here I know from elsewhere and those are not the folks commenting the past few days. Several of the folks that have been reccing anti diaries here also have accounts on Alegre's site (as did I for about ten seconds until it was deleted), and that "makes me wonder..." :-)

The diary in question did have arguably valid criticisms in it, which I noted in my comment therein. The title was a slam at myself and others ("hype" is one of the dogwhistles that goes with "cult" "koolaid" etc.) and it had made the reclist with eight of the usual folks who rec anything negative to the Dem nominee. Your recent diaries that I have noticed have been questioning the media - also a valid arguement - and not the more offensive of a flurry of similar diaries more specifically chewing on how sexist the media is and how that is part of the grand conspiracy orchestrated by Powers Against Women to enable the current nominee to succeed. It is not the topic in itself that bothers me, it is that domination of that topic or anything else that can be used against the Dem nominee in the diaries and the rec list. This diary and my comment that preceeded it specifically did not ask that those who are reccing up the anti diaries to stop, rather that people who are not reccing anything should take the time to rec whatever they choose. It has only been because so few bother to do so that such a small group could have such undue influence. My goal here is to encourage more people to rec, whether their choices match mine or not, and foster the type of healthy debate you assert that I am opposed to.

Your "people like you" comments are becoming a habit, and are niether accurate nor insightful. You may choose to disagree with my commentary, but if you have missed the reiteration of my support for debate then you are skipping over the good bits. Further, you have jumped on me several times for asking questions you do not approve of and responded with, as now, the "I will no longer be (communicating) with you" response. Again, your choice. But not the choice of someone claiming to support open debate. In fact, it is precisely the kind of thing someone who believes as you assert that I do would say.

Decline to debate with me if you choose. I do not decline to debate with anyone. That is the point.
